2003年10月30日，中国西安市西北大学发生了一起中国学生抗议日本留学生和老师的“辱华行为”的事件。事件的导火线为2003年10月29日晚，西北大学外国语学院“外语文化节”闭幕晚会。当时在校的日本籍老师刚田以及包括野田直树在内的三名留学生有一个表演节目，他们身穿突出男女性别的道具服装，表演一些半男半女的动作。他们在头上戴着猪、狗等动物头像，还在身上分别挂着日本国旗、中国国旗，以及红心图像。这些表演引起了中国学生们的愤怒，他们认为一是表演太下流，二是头上带有猪的头像的那位日本学生胸前挂着中国国旗，意思是侮辱中国是猪。愤怒的学生们走上街头，抗议日本留学生“辱华”。
看到网上这些报道之后，我感到自己有义务出来说几句话，尽自己微薄的力量去减小中日双方的理解差异。
我曾在日本工作过两年，当时工作生活压力极大，每天实际工作12小时，周末还得加班。回家后精疲力尽，吃完晚饭，洗完澡，看会儿电视作为休息，最厌烦的电视节目就是政治宣传，最喜欢的就是逗人开心的搞笑节目。电视台当然了解观众的心情，一些频道竭尽全力、哗众取宠，力争收视率高，赚些广告钱。除中国常见的相声、小品剧之外，搞笑节目还常常让演员男扮女装，做些半男半女的动作；穿上突出性别的道具做些动作，等等。在这些电视节目中长大的日本孩子早已司空见惯，普遍觉得这是日本文化的一部分。
很多动物在中国文化中都有贬义，如猪、狗、乌龟，然在日本文化中并无贬义，猪表示乖巧听话，好好吃饭；狗表示忠诚、机敏；乌龟表示健康长寿，等等。许多日本人甚至用这些动物作自己的名字，如猪木、犬养、龟田。我儿子属猪，1983年生，我给他买的日本儿童读物中有很多歌颂猪的故事，我常念给他听，鼓励他好好吃饭。以至于吾儿至今都认为猪是好动物。
扑克牌中的红心形状样似动物的心脏，又是红色，在日本、美国、加拿大文化中代表爱和友谊。若在AB之间画个红心，则表示A爱B，B爱A，AB友好。三名日本学生胸前分别挂着日本和中国的国旗，还有一个红心，明显是意在表现中日友好，没有任何贬义。
